Heavy rains in August 2022 caused damage to the northern half of the line between Kanita and Minamaya, forcing it to suspend service. JR East proposed to the towns of Sotogahama and Imabetsu along the line, as well as Aomori Prefecture, to abolish the section and switch to buses and taxis. After a year and a half of discussions, the two towns have accepted the bus/taxi conversion, and adjustments are underway with the aim of discontinuing the railway in the spring of 2027 . In the northern part of the Tsugaru Peninsula, which includes this section, demand-driven shared-ride cabs had been in operation for a month prior to the disaster. JR East is now working with the local community to establish a non-profit organization（ NPO） to manage the local transportation system, including the town’s buses. This is the first attempt for JR East, and the company faces issues such as further improvement of communication with the local community and hurdles in promoting the system to the elderly.
