内容記述 Our prior study demonstrated an association between bone-marrow macrophages' morphological changes and the cause of death listed in forensic autopsies. To solve some methodological limitations, we herein investigated the relationship between the cause of death and macrophages in the bone marrow and the spleen in autopsy cases (including judicial cases). We gathered bone marrow and spleen specimens from 183 forensic autopsy cases and conducted hematoxylin-eosin, Berlin blue, and immunostaining using antibodies against CD163, CD61, and CD138. We measured the densities of swollen, hemophagocytic, and hemosiderin-laden macrophages in each specimen and examined the decedents' background data. Our analyses revealed a correlation between the bone marrow's and spleen's numbers of macrophages with morphological changes. Compared to the acute-death group, the group of deaths with a prolonged agonal period showed a hemophagocytic tendency in both bone marrow and spleen, an increased number of hemosiderin-laden macrophages in the bone marrow, and an increased number of swollen splenic macrophages. Swollen and hemophagocytic macrophages in both organs were increased in the group in which a return of spontaneous circulation had been observed. These data indicate that examining the morphological changes of macrophages in both the bone marrow and the spleen in forensic autopsy cases helps distinguish the cause of death.
