Tracks in Japanは1878年に来日した英国の女性旅行家イザベラ・バードの日本旅行記\nである。初版は1880年にロンドンのジョン・マレー社から出版されて当時のベストセラーとなった。\nこれに対して、トーマス・W・ブラキストンとホーレス・ケプロンはそれぞれの著書で、厳しくイ\nザベラ・バードの記述を批判した。\n　1885年にジョン・マレー社から初版の半分以上を削除した省略新版（『日本奥地紀行』）が出たが、\n日本では、この省略版が作られたのは、彼らの厳しい批判に配慮したものだとされてきた。\n　しかし、Unbeaten Tracks in Japanの省略版の計画は、初版刊行の前からあったことを証明する\n手紙が、ジョン・マレー社には保管されていた。また「統計を削除して冒険と旅行の本を作る」と\nいう省略版の目的の記述も見つかった。これらから彼らの批判と省略版の関係はあったのかという\n疑問が生じた。\n　そこで、本研究では彼らの批判箇所と省略版での削除箇所の関係を精査検討した。批判の対象と\nなった記述が「覚書き」や「一般事項」などの説明的項目に含まれていて、一括して削除されたも\nののほかにも、個別の信書中にあってほとんど残されているものや、数項目の事項のうちの一つを\n削除したものなどもあり、批判箇所への対応には一貫性がみられなかった。\n　また、省略版では関西旅行や居留地などの西洋人のよく行く地域や日本の近代化を記した部分が\n削除されたが、そのほとんどは彼らの指摘とは関係がなかった。これらのことから、省略版は、ブ\nラキストンらの批判に配慮した結果であるとはいえないとの結論に至った。\n　省略の結果として、当初の目的どおりに未踏の地の冒険と旅行の本として改編されて、Unbeaten\nTracks
