The study was undertaken in preparation for a continuing study of place and furusato (home/origins)in Japanese-language literature, particularly in the context of the Japanese occupation of Manchuria (and, later,Manchukuo). This paper provides context for that project through a comparative survey with an eye toward thethemes of colon-becoming-nature and depictions of colonial lands as “no-place place” identified in my previousresearch.
