| 内容記述 | This report outlines the practice of micro-debate (Nakajima, 2009) conducted as an introduction to group debates in English Communication A, a Liberal Arts English Course of Hirosaki University. For this debate, the students in groups of three are required to make a presentation to persuade their group members to join one of three events (National Day Parade; Tasty Food; Fireworks and Shows) which are held on the National Holiday in the UAE. The results of this practice imply that introducing a micro-debate, which creates the necessity to communicate, facilitates students’ attitude to carefully examine the explanatory passage of the textbook or to look up necessary expressions. On the other hand, one concern gleaned from this practice is that in judging the winner of the debate, students focused mainly on non-linguistic factors, such as volume of voice, size of gestures, and use of pictures. Based on these observations, this reports identifies the need for clear instructions which raise students’ consciousness to focus on the content of presentations, such as organized arguments and logical development. |
