In 2021, Hirosaki University implemented a new curriculum for first-year Liberal Arts English courses. To assess the effectiveness of this curriculum reform, a university wide survey was conducted. In this working paper, we first provide some background on reforming the English courses in the Liberal Arts curriculum. The goal of these new courses is to develop studentsʼ communicative competence through using student-centered approaches to learning. Then we describe the survey that assessed this curriculum change along five dimensions: course goals, common course instruction, course textbooks and guidebook, student grades, and student perspectives towards the courses. English instructors (N = 31) teaching in the Liberal Arts English curriculum completed this survey. An analysis of the data reveals that some areas of the curriculum reform have been effective while other areas need to be improved. We are currently discussing possible ways to address some of these shortcomings in the English Department meetings. |
