This working paper presents the results of a review of the advanced English curriculum of Hirosaki University. It introduces the former curriculum, explaining the impetus for the overhaul, including in part, flagging enrolment numbers. This is followed by an investigation into class scheduling across the institution as a whole for the purpose of identifying the most appropriate times for holding the classes. The paper then turns to an extensive online student survey (N = 752) which produced data on the degree of awareness of the advanced curriculum; reasons for taking/ wanting to take the classes; reasons for not taking/not wanting to take the classes; interest in English skills-based classes, academic English, and content-based or project-style classes; as well as interest in a list of course-content topics. The paper concludes by presenting the new curriculum proposal with more detailed justifications, comments on its first full year of implementation, and concerns for future consideration. |
