内容記述 | The purpose of this study is to develop and assess a Five-Minute Measurement of Extensive Reading Level (5M-ER), which could then be implemented into Liberal Arts English courses. This measurement was developed using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to identify the starting Extensive Reading level for English learners with similar CEFR proficiency but differing reading skills. First-year university students (N = 400) with CEFR A1 were divided into two groups: Group A (n = 236) and Group B (n = 164). The groups differed based on the Extensive Reading in-class activities they completed during the first 10 minutes of class; Group A engaged in group and classroom activities related to the books they read outside of class time, while Group B read books during class time. On the first day of class, students took the 5MER to evaluate their English reading levels. Based on the number of words read within five minutes, they began Extensive Reading at an appropriate level such as Starter Level and Stage 1. A Mann-Whitney U test was conducted using an end of semester questionnaire that measured students’ perceived effectiveness of the 5M-ER and the Extensive Reading used for the class. Results showed no significant effect between the groups. This study suggests that the 5M-ER could be an effective measurement tool for Extensive Reading in Liberal Arts English courses regardless of the different types of Extensive Reading in-class activities employed. | |||||||||||||
